What is a +Group?
A +Group (“Plus” Group) is a micro-community extension of RISE designed with the early church in mind. 4-10 group members form a single +Group, which meets either virtually or in person at a location of the group’s choosing, and journey together in regularly scheduled gatherings that offer spiritual development, social interaction and practical, mutual support.
Why should I join a +Group?
At RISE, we see these gatherings as the primary place for mutual care and deep-rooted community. While Sunday worship services are the place we come to worship as one congregation, +Groups are the true “home base” of our faith community, where relationship and theological exploration happen in the intimacy of circles rather than rows. We want this for every person of faith, and believe it is reflective of Jesus’ relationship with his disciples - his closest peers and ministry partners.
I am worried that I may not believe what the other members of my group believe, or that they may not accept me due to my core identity. Is this going to be a safe space for me?
It is of the utmost importance that our +Group environments are social and emotional safe spaces for all people, due to the nature of the relationship-building, intimacy, and active listening that is inherent to the +Group model. As we often say at RISE, everyone means EVERYONE.
Our groups, as all our environments, celebrate people of all colors, religious perspectives, gender identities and sexual orientations, without reservation or exception. That said, if your personal beliefs do not afford you the liberty to support unqualified acceptance of others alongside you in the journey of faith, you are welcome at our many other environments and events.

I’m a college student and would rather be in a +group with people my age. Is that an option?
YES! We also offer +Groups through RISE U college ministry. These groups may meet virtually or in person, but must comply with student organization rules in addition to local COVID mandates. To join a RISE U +Group, contact our Campus Ministry Coordinator at campusministry@riseharrisonburg.com.
How long will it take to get in a +group?
Please do not get discouraged if you are not placed in a small group right away. Keep in mind that we wait until we have at least 5-8 interested individuals to form a group so that you’re all beginning at the same time and can get to know each other without the unevenness of folks joining at different times. If a group is at a point where a new member may transition easily, we may add one in part way through. Patience and continued communication is key!
What do I need to do to join a +group?
All you have to do is indicate your interest by filling out this brief Google form to collect a little more information from you as to your interest and availability during the week. We can’t wait to hear from you!
