"Every [one] can be contemporary only with the age in which [they] live -
and then with one thing more: with Christ's life on earth ...
his earthly life accompanies the race,
and accompanies every generation in particular,
as the eternal history."
~Soren Kierkegaard
WORDS OF GREETING AND GATHERING

WELCOMING STATEMENT
RISE believes that God has open arms, and so should we. Our Creator wants us to love, accept and affirm every human being, including persons of every age, race, ethnic background, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, family or socioeconomic status, educational background, religion or creed, and physical or mental ability. Opening AFFIRMATION
~Presbyterian Church USA, adapted
We worship a God who inhabits our world and indwells our lives.
We need not look up to find God; we need only to look around:
within ourselves,
beyond ourselves,
into the eyes of another.
We need not listen for distant thunder to find God; we need only listen to:
the music of life,
the words of children,
the questions of the curious,
the rhythm of a heartbeat.
We worship a God who inhabits our world and indwells our lives.
Opening SongS
Songs Will Happen!
“Indescribable”
~Chris Tomlin
From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
Creation's revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
All exclaiming
Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow
Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light
Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night
None can fathom.
Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
(Repeat)
“Higher Ground”
~Michael Stern
River water rising
Rain still comin’ down
The ‘ol farm’s a lake, but if the levees break
It’ll damn near take this whole town
It’s like livin’ in a nightmare
That you can’t believe is true
How we’ll clean up this mess is anybody’s guess
Don’t know how we’ll make it through
I’m headed up to higher ground
I heard a stranger say
And with a hand held out to me, said
We’d best be on our way
We don’t have much money
And we’re runnin’ out of gas
This crazy war goes on & now our house is gone
We just pray this too will pass
I’m headed up to higher ground
I heard a stranger say
And with a hand held out to me, said
We’d best be on our way
All across this country
All across this land
From east to west folks will do their best
To lend a helpin’ hand
I’m headed up to higher ground
I heard my neighbor say
And with a hand held out to me, said
We’d best be on our way
River water rising
Rain still comin’ down
The ‘ol farm’s a lake, but if the levees break
It’ll damn near take this whole town
It’s like livin’ in a nightmare
That you can’t believe is true
How we’ll clean up this mess is anybody’s guess
Don’t know how we’ll make it through
I’m headed up to higher ground
I heard a stranger say
And with a hand held out to me, said
We’d best be on our way
We’re headed up to higher ground
I heard the people say.
And with their hands held out to me said
We’d best be on our way.
And with their hands held out to me said
We’d best be on our way.
Scripture Reading
Acts 1:6-14 (The Message)
6 When they were together for the last time they asked, “Master, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time?”
7-8 He told them, “You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.”
9-11 These were his last words. As they watched, he was taken up and disappeared in a cloud. They stood there, staring into the empty sky. Suddenly two men appeared—in white robes! They said, “You Galileans!—why do you just stand here looking up at an empty sky? This very Jesus who was taken up from among you to heaven will come as certainly—and mysteriously—as he left.”
12-13 So they left the mountain called Olives and returned to Jerusalem. It was a little over half a mile. They went to the upper room they had been using as a meeting place:
Peter,
John,
James,
Andrew,
Philip,
Thomas,
Bartholomew,
Matthew,
James, son of Alphaeus,
Simon the Zealot,
Judas, son of James.14 They agreed they were in this for good, completely together in prayer, the women included. Also Jesus’ mother, Mary, and his brothers.
THEOLOGICAL Reflection
Chris Zepp
“What Day Is It?”
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Life often gets so busy and chaotic that sometimes we hardly know what day it is. In the midst of such busyness, how can we prevent our calendars and our to-do lists from taking over our lives? How can we cope with thwarted or delayed expectations? How do you remember what’s really important each day?
While the resurrection was about Jesus being raised from the dead, his ascension is about him being raised and removed from this land where we are living, and after he ascended to heaven, the disciples returned to Jerusalem to wait and pray together. How does their example of “waiting and praying” challenge our dependence on schedules and our need/desire for action?
How are you being a witness for Jesus in your life and context? How does what you are doing complement or distract from your being?
Song
“Walk in Jerusalem (Just Like John)”
~Traditional Spiritual
I Want To Be Ready (x3)
To Walk In Jerusalem Just Like John.
John said the city was just foursquare,
Walk in Jerusalem just like John.
And He Declared He’d Meet Me There,
Walk in Jerusalem just like John
I Want To Be Ready (x3)
To Walk In Jerusalem Just Like John.
O John, O John, What Do You Say? (Walk in. . . )
That I’ll be there at the crowning day, (Walk in. . . )
I Want To Be Ready (x3)
To Walk In Jerusalem Just Like John.
When Peter was preaching at pentecost (Walk in. . . )
He was endowed with the Holy Ghost, (Walk in. . . )
I Want To Be Ready (x3)
To Walk In Jerusalem Just Like John.
Someday we’ll RISE and shine in Glory. (Walk in. . . )
Until then we’ll tell the Gospel story. (Walk in. . . )
I Want To Be Ready (x3)
To Walk In Jerusalem Just Like John.
Sometimes I’m up, sometimes I’m down. (Walk in. . . )
Still my soul is heaven bound. (Walk in. . . )
I Want To Be Ready (x3)
To Walk In Jerusalem Just Like John.

Offering and NOMOFOMO
One of our core values is, "God gives to us, so we give back." We're called to give as a joy-filled response to what we've been given. Your financial gifts make a tremendous difference in the lives of God's beloved in Harrisonburg and beyond. Whether it's helping to make sure children in our community have enough to eat, helping to respond to the mental health crisis in our community, or providing much needed backing for the operating costs of our spaces and staff — your gift is a part of God's dream and we are grateful for everyone who partners with us on this journey!

We are reading The Bible Says So: What We Get Right (and Wrong) About Scripture’s Most Controversial Issues by Dan McClellan (2025). “In The Bible Says So, Dan McClellan leverages his popular "data over dogma" approach, and his years of experience in the academy and on social media, to lay out in clear and accessible ways what the data indicate the Bible does and doesn't say about issues ranging from homosexuality, abortion, and slavery to monotheism, inspiration, and even God's wife.”
THE RETURN OF THE Sitting
6-8 pm THURSDAY Nights
beginning THIS WEEK (May 21)
Brother’s Craft Brewing
It’s that time again! Some people have “standing” office hours, but you know that we do things a bit differently here at RISE, so we have “sitting” hours during the summer season! Join Alexis and/or Chris on Thursday nights at Brothers throughout the summer - whether you have some burning theological questions or you just want to hang out with friends, we’ll be there and happy to chat with whoever might come!
Feel free to bring the kids and your dinner as well!
“STORIES AND VOICES”
Coming to worship this summer!
At RISE we believe that we are all theologians. It’s a big reason why we spend a fair amount of our time in worship gatherings each week in discussion and reflection. But this summer, we want to take it up a notch. Enter “Stories and Voices” — a campaign to bring YOUR voices and YOUR stories to the fore this summer!
Do you have a story that has been significant in your life and/or faith journey that you are willing to share?
Are you an artist, actor, musician, or videographer?
Have you ever just wanted to take your turn leading the community in theological reflection?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, think about clicking on the link below to start the conversation about how we can bring your story and your voice to fore in RISE worship this summer!
Closing Song
“If I had a Hammer” (The Hammer Song)
~Pete Seeger
If I had a hammer,
I'd hammer in the morning,
I'd hammer in the evening,
All over this land,
I'd hammer out danger,
I'd hammer out a warning,
I'd hammer out love between,
My brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.
If I had a bell,
I'd ring it in the morning,
I'd ring in the evening,
All over this land,
I'd ring out danger,
I'd ring out a warning,
I'd ring out love between,
My brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.
If I had a song,
I'd sing it in the morning,
I'd sing it in the evening,
All over this land,
I'd sing out danger,
I'd sing out a warning,
I'd sing out love between,
My brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.
Well, I've got a hammer
and I've got a bell
and I've got a song to sing
all over this land
It's the hammer of justice
It's the bell of freedom
It's a song about love between
My brothers and my sisters
All over this land.
Parting Blessing
~Homiletics, adapted
As we go our separate ways, let’s depart in the assurance that God does not remain in a cloud, hidden and concealed from us. God is still among us!
So let’s not gaze longingly at heaven for a sign.
Let’s not wait for a day that is coming – God is revealed among us!
Let’s glimpse the face of Christ in one another.
Let’s celebrate the Holy Spirit, who moves and works in our community.
Let’s give glory to God, today and every day!
Remember friends — you are a gift!
Now go and be a gift!
