February 26, 2012: That's What God Said: Part 6

Matthew 13:31-33 (CEB)

He told another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and planted in his field. It’s the smallest of all seeds. But when it’s grown, it’s the largest of all vegetable plants. It becomes a tree so that the birds in the sky come and nest in its branches.”

“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in a bushel of wheat flour until the yeast had worked its way through all the dough.”

Matthew 13:44-47 (CEB)

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that somebody hid in a field, which someone else found and covered up. Full of joy, the finder sold everything and bought that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he found one very precious pearl, he went and sold all that he owned and bought it. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that people threw into the lake and gathered all kinds of fish."

Romans 12:1-2

So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Closing Prayer

Today at worship, in lieu of a closing prayer, we said a "Commissioning (or Send-Off) Prayer" over our Mission Team journeying to Philadelphia, Mississippi next week. We said this as a reminder that we are never alone ... The connections we have here go with us and more importantly, God goes with us. Wherever we are in all the earth, we know that we are never alone. So as a community, we are sent out in love and we are sent out by God's grace.

God, you have called us into being through love.
You have joined us to one another in love.
Grant us the strength to carry your blessing from this place to the next.
May we be at home in any land,
for all the earth is yours.
May the lamp of your word
guide our feet on the unsure paths of life.
Let us go in the peace of Christ to love and serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God!
